“New Moon” Breaks Box Office Records
The newest installment of Twilight “New Moon” hit theatres over the weekend and is now poised to be the largest box office ticket sales on record for a single day. The biggest ticket sales record will bring the movie it’s second box office record breaker since its release over the weekend.
According to experts monitoring the ticket sales on and off today, the tween vampire saga is almost guaranteed to gross over the $67.2 million needed to beat out the current record set by Heath Ledger’s award winning “Dark Knight”, which dominated the box office last year.
By 5 pm on the night of its release the movie had already managed to sell out $50 million worth of tickets in Canada and the U.S. alone. Once the later evening shows are included the total is expected to jump to more than $70 million.
The huge box office numbers are largely in part to the overwhelming amount of hype the movie has received from die-hard twilight fans across the country. A total weekend grossing of at least $110 million is expected, and it is possible that the numbers could be closer to $120 million. Needless to say, the “New Moon” will be the highest grossing film of the year.
The “New Moon” release was worldwide, and revenue from the more than 25 countries outside of the US and Canada is expected to bring out an additional $30 million to the box office ticket sales. Summit Entertainment, the studio responsible for the Twilight franchise will officially release Friday’s ticket sales sometime today, however the numbers are expected to be similar.
