X Factor Charity Single Tops UK Music Charts

The rendition of single “You Are Not Alone” featuring the finalists on this year’s “X Factor” reality competition show soared straight to number one on the singles charts, according to the Official Charts Company on Sunday. The single took the top spot after selling 193,000 copies, which is the second highest sales for a single this year.

This has proven “X Factor’s” increase in popularity since last year, probably due to controversial Jedward, although they were just voted off this weekend. The previous winner of the contest was Leona Lewis, whose “Echo” album is sitting at number one.

The cover version of the Michael Jackson hit by the show finalists was released for charity to aid Great Ormond Street Hospital for children in London. This is the second time the show has released a charity single featuring its finalists, with last year’s single being “Hero” by Mariah Carey. It raised £1 million for Help for Heroes, which supports wounded British soldiers.

“X Factor” executive producer and head judge Simon Cowell said that after the record charity last year, they wanted to do something like that on the show every year to help good causes. He is very proud of the single and hopes it will raises tons of money for those who really need it, Simon added. It has already raised hundreds of thousands.

Finalist Joe McElderry said that it’s great to be a part of this single, which is making a difference in peoples’ lives. The other contests are just as excited about the single’s number one status.
