Adam Lambert AMA Performance Simulates Oral Sex
Adam Lambert had a smashing performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, but not everyone thought so. He became a huge topic on Twitter (aside from Jennifer Lopez’s fall), and on Monday it was revealed that ABC received about 1,500 complaints about the performance, which featured Lambert simulating oral sex with a male back-up dancer, passionately kissing a male keyboardist, as well as giving the audience his middle finger at the end of the song.
The 27-year-old “American Idol” runner-up isn’t apologizing for his performance either. He says that his intention wasn’t to make people mad, but to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom. However, he isn’t concerned that he offended anyone, saying that he is an artist that doesn’t cater to everyone.
Lambert continued that there is a double standard for performers, with female artists doing provocative things like this for years, but because he is a male, his performance is edited, which was done for the show’s airing on the west coast, and he is discriminated against. People are afraid, which is really sad, he added. Lambert also noted that most of the sexual energy on stage at the event was in the moment.
A Dick Clark Productions spokeswoman, which produces the American Music Awards, said that they didn’t know about Lambert’s plans based on his rehearsals and didn’t expect the impromptu moments. The show had its largest audience since 2002 (about 14.2 million viewers), according to ABC, who may now be at risk of a fine from the Federal Communications Commission. The commission previously fined CBS $550,000 for the famous broadcast glimpse of Janet Jackson’s breast (wardrobe malfunction) during the half-time show of the 2004 Super Bowl.
