Family Ties actress Meredith Baxter Comes Out of the Closet
Meredith Baxter, the actress who played the part of the mom in the 1980’s show “Family Ties”, revealed on Wednesday that she is a lesbian. The announcement came after media reports and photos of her and another woman in an embrace were published for the public to view.
The 62-year-old went on “The Today Show” to say that she realized she was gay only 7 years ago, which is many years after she divorced her third husband. She told the show that her 5 kids (ages 25-42) have supported her since she told them. Baxter also explained to the show how it happened, saying that she got involved with someone she never anticipated, and it awoke her, adding that she had a really hard time connecting with men on a relationship level.
After the photos of her and Nancy Locke, a building contractor, were published, she decided to talk to the media to set everything straight, confirming that she went on a Caribbean cruise with about 1,200 other lesbians. But she wasn’t always so comfortable with the fact of the media knowing and even asked Locke to park her truck farther away from the house. When she said no, Baxter came to grips with the fact that she needed to reach a level of comfort, and now they live their lives very openly in Los Angeles, having dated for 4 years.
This news comes as a shock to many, as Baxter was the mother figure, Elyse Keaton, on the family sitcom from 1982-89. She has been a guest and appeared in recurring roles on other shows since and runs a skincare company now.
