Gordon Brown Blows Off Sarkozy Following Trinidad Talks
Reports are coming in that Gordon Brown has blown off an offer made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy, after announcing victory over Britain in the fight for EU Commissioner of Financial Services, extended a peace offering to Gordon Brown but was promptly rejected.
After Michel Barnier won the appointment for the EU commission position, Sarkozy made a statement saying that he was glad to see French ideas winning out in politics in Europe. He continued to insult adding that Brits were the biggest losers in the line-up of available EU jobs. After making such remarks, Sarkozy and Prime Minister Brown met face-to-face at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting held in Trinidad. At the meeting it is said that Brown and Sarkozy exchanged heated words regarding the publicly made insults.
Sarkozy was expected to meet with Gordon Brown at the Prime Minister’s office in London, however now, Mr. Brown has cancelled their meeting and arranged to meet with Sarkozy in Brussels next week. Representatives for the Prime Minister insist that the two men had an amicable discussion in Trinidad and remain on good terms.
Meanwhile, those in the financial sector in London are furious over Sarkozy’s remarks. Alistair Darling said that London is New York’s only rival for status as a global financial hub, and that France must admit that London operates in favour of all of Europe’s financial interests. Barnier has hastened to reassure the London financial sector that upcoming changes will not affect the industry in the City of London.
