Gino and Stuart Charged for Rat Meal on I’m A Celebrity

“I’m A Celebrity” contestants Stuart Manning and Gino D’Acampo, who was crowned King of the Jungle on Friday, have been caught up in a legal battle over something they did on the show - kill, cook and eat a rat. As funny as this sounds, as the show is all about eating weird things and various animal body parts, the show didn’t get permission to kill this particular rat, so the stars have been charged with animal cruelty in Australia.

Gino is a television chef, while Manning is a former star on “Hollyoaks”, but at a court in New South Wales, Australia on February 3, they will be suspects for slaughtering an animal. If the two are convicted, they could spend up to 3 years in jail.

Authorities in Australia apparently accept the killing and eating of invertebrates, but killing and eating animals that haven’t been bred for that purpose is not acceptable. David O’Shannessy, chief inspector of the RSPCA, says that the allegations are that an animal was treated cruelly on the set, but there is a code of conduct for how animals are used in New South Wales. Killing the rat for entertainment will not be accepted, he continued, and then added that they haven’t ruled out charging ITV.

However, it doesn’t seem like the “rat risotto” was made for entertainment purposes at all. The contestants were merely trying to enhance their meals of rice and beans to add meat, as they had been put on rations. The campers enjoyed their meal, and Gino said at one point that it was the best recipe he had ever made.

I am an animal lover myself, and respect everyone who is against animal cruelty. However, if these two men are to be charged, then so should the show and creators of the show. The whole show revolves around killing, eating and using animals in trials for entertainment. It is cruel and heartless and whether the animals are insects, mammals or amphibians it is still animal cruelty, as they are still alive and being harmed. Therefore, I disagree with the two men being charged, as they should not be handed the blame.
