Sherlock Holmes London Premiere and Mixed Reviews

Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” premiered in London this week, with fans turning out to get a look at their favorite stars. The film features Robert Downey Jr, Rachel McAdams, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan and Mark Strong, who all turned up for the red carpet event.

The film isn’t anything like the depictions of Sherlock Holmes in previous television programs and movies - it is much better! The reinvention of what the world thinks is Sherlock Holmes’ character is actually not what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intend when he wrote the stories and novels. Guy Ritchie, on the other hand, is now giving the world a more accurate take on this “crime sleuth”. He says that he has never seen other productions of the stories, but has read the books and had an idea of how Sherlock Holmes should be.

Even Rachel McAdams (plays Irene Adler, Holmes’ love interest) agrees, saying that she doesn’t think Ritchie’s adaptation is far from what Doyle did. Mark Strong (plays Lord Blackwood) says that they didn’t add anything new to the film, only took stuff from the short stories and novels to make it. Jude Law (plays Watson) said that he always thought of his character as a blundering idiot, yet realizes that he was intended to be a tough guy, as he came from the Afghan war. Robert Downey Jr (plays Holmes) admitted to having reservations about depicting his character, but said he liked the challenge and soon got over his concerns.

Critics have had their say on the film now too, and they are little mixed. However, it is agreed by many of them that the film will become a hit. The pairing of Downey and Law is being raved about as well, even though some critics condemn the pairing for being too much alike. It’s clear that anyone who doesn’t like the new film version of the characters only wished they had been portrayed like the ones they grew up seeing in previous productions of the stories. This will definitely be a film worth seeing, and it will hit theatres on Christmas Day in the US and the day after worldwide.
