Scottish Carrier Flyglobespan Collapses
Thousands of holiday travelers were left in chaos on Wednesday as Scottish budget airline Flyglobespan collapsed into administration. It is understood that the Civil Aviation Authority will be responsible for bringing back 1,100 people currently on holidays, which were booked as part of the Globespan Group’s package holiday. Plus, there is another 3,400 people on holiday that aren’t protected, as they booked their airfare directly through the airline.
Furthermore, there are about 27,000 travelers who were booked on flights with Flyglobespan in the future that are protected, but another 90,000 that aren’t due to forward bookings, although they may be protected under travel insurance or through their credit card. As for the staff, it is understood that the 800 strong were made redundant when all the flights were canceled. The carrier even stated on their website that they didn’t plan to reschedule any of the flights.
PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Bruce Cartwright confirmed the failed airline, but said that their focus is assisting the passengers who have been stranded and communicating with travelers that have lost future bookings. They strongly advise that those who planned to travel with Flyglobespan on Thursday to stay at home or plan to travel a different way, as the flight will not take off, he added.
Flyglobespan stopped accepting bookings on Wednesday afternoon after attempting to secure a rescue package for eleven hours, but failed. Their founder of the carrier, Tom Dalrymple, said that the financial deal would have been good news for everyone at the company, as well as customers, but the budget carrier will be closing after only 7 years of business.
