Race still on for the Christmas number one

In a seemingly desperate bid to make sure that X Factor champion Joe McElderry makes it to the top of the charts this Christmas his management has slashed the price of his single The Climb. Following an internet campaign to get Rage Against The Machine into the top spot record bosses have reduced the price of McElderry’s cover single to just 29 pence.

Rage Against The Machine have promised that if they win the race to the coveted number one spot they will give fans in the U.K. a free concert. They have also said that all proceeds from the song Killing In The Name Of will go to the charity Shelter. Rage Against The Machine guitarist and spokesman Tom Morello said that he liked Simon Cowell and that he didn’t see the competition as being an attack on him personally. He went on to point out that the competition was a great example of democracy in action.

Joe McElldery claims that he is not taking the battle for number one personally but will be upset if he does not manage to secure the top spot adding that he did not think people sitting down to their Christmas lunch were going to want to hear a song packed with expletives.

Industry experts say that the contest is too close to call at the moment and that everyone will have to wait for the official announcement at 7pm. Gennaro Castaldo from HMV said that he suspected that Joe might just make it. Whoever comes out on top it will be Sony Records who will be delighted as both acts are signed to them.
