Terry Wogan signs off for the last time

Sir Terry Wogan signed off for the last time yesterday after twenty-seven-years behind the microphone. The Radio 2 breakfast show host will now hand the reigns over to Chris Evans. The Irish born entertainer regularly pulled in eight million listeners every morning with his light hearted banter and his breakfast show would often top the charts of most listened to programme on the air. In order that he would not miss his final show because of the snow Wogan stayed in London rather that going home to Buckinghamshire.

As well as hosting the Radio 2 show since 1972 Wogan is well known for fronting the Children In Need charity shows on the BBC. He has said that he definitely wants to continue doing this. He also became famous as the voice of the European Song Contest, a role which he recently handed over to comedian Graham Norton. He will also be fondly remembered as host of BBC 1’s Wogan on which he interviewed many of the world’s most well known celebrities.

On his final show he asked listeners not to be downhearted but rather celebrate the years they have been together. Well wishers who sent messages in to Wogan on his final day included Gordon Brown and David Cameron. Brown said that Wogan had managed to shape the imagination of a generation and Cameron said that he had a wonderful ability to focus on the lighter side of life. Many fans of the show travelled to see Wogan as he left Radio 2 for that last time and many staff were said to be in tears as he departed.
