Eurostar cancels all services

Eurostar has announced that all services will be cancelled today. Test trains are set to run instead so that the company can figure out what exactly went wrong when thousands of travellers were left stranded in the Channel Tunnel for hours without air conditioning, light, food or water. A spokesperson for Eurostar said that the cancellations were necessary so that customers were not put at risk of becoming stuck on malfunctioning trains.

Five Eurostar trains broke down on Friday with a sixth failing as it exited the tunnel last night on the British side. It is thought that the extreme weather which has hit the U.K. is to blame. Since Friday night’s fiasco there have been a number of calls for Eurostar’s CEO, Richard Brown to hand in his resignation. Critics say that it is inexcusable that Eurostar had allowed itself to be so underprepared.

Eurostar said that they have tried to run their usual services but that the weather has meant that it had not been possible to do so. The company said that all those who had been affected by Friday’s breakdowns would be offered full refunds on their tickets, £150 in compensation and a return ticket to be used in the future.

It is not just Eurostar which has found itself struggling with the weather. easyJet have recommended that its customers check before they leave for the airport to see whether flights have had to be cancelled. Those taking a ferry to France have also been told to check for possible cancellations before setting out.
