Rage Against The Machine Named Christmas Number 1 Over X Factor’s Joe McElderry
American rock band Rage Against The Machine has beaten out “X Factor” winner Joe McElderry’s “The Climb” for the number 1 single during the run-up to Christmas with their 1992 single “Killing In The Name”. The group sold more than 500,000 copies during the week after the Facebook campaign, urging fans to keep the pop single from reaching the top, gathered nearly a million people to be a success. Joe’s single sold more than 450,000 copies during the week.
The rock band’s single has now become the first download-only Christmas number one in the UK, as well as has broken the record for biggest download sales in one week. Martin Talbot, managing director of The Official Charts Company, congratulated both Rage and Joe on their success. The public support seen with the rock group’s single has been amazing, helping them break two records. While Joe came in second this year, had it been any other year he would have had the top spot, he added.
One of the Facebook campaign founders, Tracy Morter, said she was shocked at the response they got, as well as its success. She continued that they want Joe to know that is wasn’t anything personal and hopes he has a great Christmas. Morter also noted that the group was able to raise £63,000 for Shelter, the homeless charity.
After hearing the news of making number 1, Rage front man Zack De La Rocha told Radio 1’s Scott Mills that they are very excited and ecstatic about the success of their single. He also thanked everyone for participating in the campaign and promised fans they would perform in concert for them next year.
