Avatar Heavily Leads Weekend Box Office with $73 million Opening
James Cameron’s “Avatar” had a great weekend at the box office during its debut, earning a huge $73 million in the US, as well as $232.2 million around the world. It more more exceeds the $50 - $60 million that Twentieth Century Fox officially predicted it would make.
“Avatar” is the first film to screen live-action in 3D, which means that it cost about $424 million to make and market and is the most expensive movie ever made. It is expected that this film will make number 1 at the box office next weekend as well, as many in the US missed it due to weather conditions and for the fact that 3D films usually hold their own for a while.
Also during the weekend box office, “The Princess & the Frog” took the number 2 spot in its fourth week (second week on wide release), with $12.2 million, totaling $44.7 million. The 3rd spot was taken by “The Blind Side” in its fifth week, making another $10 million to total $164.7 million. “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” took number 4 during its weekend debut, with $7 million in sales, while “New Moon” made another $4.4 million during its fifth week, totaling $274.5 million, to take the 5th spot on the chart.
Number 6 on the list this weekend was “Invictus” during its second week at the box office, earning another $4.2 million to bring its total to $15.8 million. “A Christmas Carol” is continuing to wind down, making $3.4 million to take 7th place on the chart during its seventh week, with a total earnings of $130.7 million. Number 8 for the weekend was “Up in the Air” with $3.1 million in earnings, bringing its total to $8.1 million after three weeks.
“Brothers” took 9th during its third week, earning $2.6 million to total $22 million. Taking the 10th spot was “Old Dogs” with $2.3 million, making a total of $43.5 million in four weeks.
