Joe McElderry Tops Charts in Ireland
Joe McElderry was able the snag the number one Christmas spot with his hit cover of Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’ this week. The X-Factor winner beat out the Rage Against The Machine hit single ‘Killing In the Name’ after a neck-and-neck competition between the two hit songs.
Rage Against The Machine began encouraging their fans to purchase their hit 90’s single earlier this month in an attempt to boycott Simon Cowell’s latest X-Factor creation. The band claimed that Simon Cowell’s X-Factor had taken away the spirit of the UK Christmas Charts.
The band’s bid to replace McElderry as the number one, which met with criticism from X-Factor fans and judges, including Cowell himself and Cheryl Cole, was successful in the UK. Last Sunday it was revealed that McElderry’s ‘The Climb’ had lost the coveted number one spot to “Killing In The Name”.
However, McElderry was able to take back some of his spotlight today, after it was announced that his hit remake of ‘The Climb’ beat out Rage’s ‘Killing In The Name’ in Ireland. Likewise, X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole joined her X-Factor compatriot on the charts with her single ‘3 Words’ coming in at number seven for the Christmas charts.
‘Killing In The Name’ was still able to take number two on the list, and Lady Gaga’s hit “Bad Romance” rounded out the top three. X Factor finalists’ single for charity “You Are Not Alone” made the top five at number four followed by ‘Meet Me Halfway’ by the Black Eyed Peas.
