Television viewing figures down on Christmas Day

It looks like the Christmas tradition of sitting down in front of the box to digest the turkey may be on the wane. Viewing figures for the 25th were down this year and the predicted number of viewers did not bother to tune in. The biggest programme of the day was Doctor Who. The show was the last but one which sees David Tennant in the title role role. Even though he was set to do battle with one of his most terrifying adversaries, the Master only 10 million bothered to switch on. This is a drop of 1.4 million viewers from last Christmas. Even EastEnders, the countries most watched programmed on Christmas day only managed to attract 10.9 million viewers. It had been hoped that the murder of Archie Mitchell might have sparked a little more excitement from the viewing public. In second place was the Royle Family with 10.2 million tuning in.

As always it was the BBC that took the lead in the ratings over ITV. Only Coronation Street managed to struggle into the top ten most watched programmes on Christmas day with figures of just less than 8 million. Even the number of people tuning into the Queen’s speech was down on last year from 8.2 million to 8.1 million.

One of the reasons for the drop in figures may be that so many more of us are spending time looking at our computer screens. Figures for Christmas day viewing do not take into account whether people are watching the programmes whilst connected to the net.
