Avatar Rocks Christmas Weekend Box Office

“Avatar” has had an explosive Christmas weekend at the box office, taking on highly anticipated “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” and “Sherlock Holmes” debuts and helping to break a record. During its second weekend, Sunday predictions estimate “Avatar” will make $75 million (a total of $212.3 million), while “Sherlock Holmes” is projected $65.3 million for the second spot on the chart and “Chipmunks” $50.2 million for third place.

Furthermore, Christmas weekend broke the record for the biggest weekend at the box office in history, earning $264.1 million after combining the top ten movies. The previous record was set during the July 18-20 weekend, when “The Dark Knight” led the box office, with total ticket sales of $253.5 million.

As for the other films this weekend, “It’s Complicated” debuted to make $22.1 million, taking number four at the box office. “Up In The Air” earned another $11.8 million to place fifth, totaling $24.5 million over four weeks. Coming in sixth at the box office this weekend was “Blind Side”, with $11.73 million in sales during its sixth week, grossing $184.3 million.
