X Factor Winner Joe McElderry Takes Top of Singles
Joe McElderry, as everyone already knows was the winner of this year’s “X Factor”, has finally gotten to enjoy his first single, “The Climb” (original by Miley Cyrus), on top of the UK singles chart. During his single’s first week of release, Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 “Killing In The Name” single took the top of the chart instead due to a Facebook campaign aiming to prevent the “X Factor” single and Simon Cowell from winning number 1.
This past week was a different story, however. With campaigners having already made their point, copies of Joe’s single were flying off store shelves again this past week, comfortably topping Rage’s single. During this last week alone, he sold another 196,000 copies (Rage selling only around 65,000 but taking second on the chart), giving him a total 650,000 in sales for the year.
These figures now put Joe only 10,000 copies away from being one of the top 5 biggest selling singles of 2009 - fifth place is currently held by “In For The Kill” by La Roux. “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga is has sold the most copies for the year so far, with about 870,000. The top selling single for the year will be announced on January 2.
Other top singles for the week included Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” in the third spot, while Cheryl Cole’s “3 Words” featuring will.i.am rose to the fourth spot. Taking fifth place was 30H3’s “Starstrukk” featuring Katy Perry, while Ke$ha reentered the top ten on the chart in tenth with “Tik Tok”. Others in the top ten included The Black Eyed Peas, Journey, Rihanna and Robbie Williams.
