Snow and Ice Weather Warning for UK New Year

Very early this morning, the Met Office issued a National Severe Weather Warning for all of the UK. According to the radar and forecast from The Weather Channel (as of this post), much of England, Wales, as well as Ireland will get heavy snow today, with more snow to hit Scotland by the night into Wednesday. The UK has already seen its fair share of snow and ice for Christmas, and mother natural apparently believes they deserve more.

The weather alert predicts much of the UK to get up to 25cm of snow on the ground, with roads becoming slippery and icy. This will most likely cause problems with transportation and power during the run up to New Year’s celebrations. Anyone flying in and out of the area is warned of delays, while road travelers are advised to take extreme caution or just don’t travel at all. Of course, all transport services will do what they can to keep travel in motion as holidaymakers continue to celebrate the season.

Meanwhile, news emerged on Monday that a man died while visiting his mother’s grave on Christmas Day. With the ground already covered in snow and ice from the recent winter weather storm, 54-year-old Jimmy Halpin slipped on some ice at Urmston Cemetery in Greater Manchester, suffering serious injuries to his head and neck.

Halpin was taken to Trafford General Hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival. He leaves behind a 22-year-old son and 29-year-old daughter, who also lost their 55-year-old mother to stomach cancer only weeks before. The children are truly living a nightmare, losing both their parents so close together and during the holidays.
