Newark Airport Security Breach Causes Lockdown
Newark Airport’s (located close to NYC) Terminal C was put on lockdown Sunday due to a security breach, according to the Transportation Security Administration. After a man walked through the wrong side of a checkpoint, avoiding being screened, security totally stopped screening people. The incident happened around 5:20pm, and it took them two and a half hours before deciding to rescreen passengers.
So far it hasn’t been revealed if the man was caught, which could only mean that he wasn’t. However, officials did find out that he wasn’t a Transportation Security Administration employee. That’s helpful!
An administration official said that flights out of Terminal C at Newark International Airport were set to resume normally after the passengers were rescreened. There was a lot of congestion in the terminal as passengers started to arrive for their flights, but were made to wait due to the breach in security. The airport mainly serves Continental Airlines, so the airline had a lot of delayed flights.
One passenger waiting said that there were about 2,000-3,000 people waiting in the terminal for security to start screening people for about two and half hours. Apparently security was checking their cameras to find the man, and didn’t want anyone going anywhere until they did. Since they couldn’t locate the man though, they started checking people again and flights eventually got back on track.
This all comes just days after security measures were supposedly increased at airports due to the attempted terrorist bombing on Christmas Day. It’s surprising that a security breach would occur right afterward. There is obviously something amiss with how authorities are handling things if people are able to walk right by without being stopped.
