Haiti Earthquake Death Toll may be Hundreds of Thousands
The most powerful earthquake to hit Haiti has left people sleeping in the streets and parks after the quake and two aftershocks destroyed government buildings and homes, as well as buried an unknown amount of people. It’s feared that more than tens of thousands - hundreds of thousands - may be dead due to Tuesday’s events, while many people may still be alive, strapped under the rubble left by the quake.
The country, which is the poorest in the western hemisphere, is obviously in desperate need of international help, and on Wednesday, US President Obama pledged that he will send unwavering support. After only a few of hours of being told about the quake, officials were planning a response.
Head of US Southern Command General Douglas Fraser says that one of the large amphibious ships in the Navy will most likely respond to the efforts with a Marine expeditionary unit. He also said that other military forces have been put on alert, which includes a 3,500 troop brigade, adding that the Pentagon is seriously looking to send thousands of Marines for the disaster effort. White House officials also said that they may send the hospital ship of the Southern Command to provide medical aid.
Other aid agencies and governments around the world have started getting together manpower and supplies, while Haiti rescue workers have started setting up makeshift clinics. France is sending 3 military transport planes with aid supplies, as well as 100 troops. Germany is sending $2.2 million for emergency assistance and governmental assessment teams, while Britain is sending the latter as well.
