More cold weather around the corner
Weather forecasters are warning that the higher temperatures and sunshine being experienced in many parts of the U.K. today should be enjoyed now because there are chances that early in the new week temperatures will once again plummet and the threat of snow will return. Much of the country has been experiencing a thaw as rain and milder temperatures have cleared away much of the snow that fell last week. Temperatures today will be highest in the south west and in London the mercury is expected to rise to just shy of double figures.
Meteogroup meteorologist Paul Mott warns that although it will start to feel a little warmer during the days the nights across the whole of the country will still be bitterly cold. He warned motorists that there was still the risk of ice on the roads and that a great deal of care still needs to be taken. Flood warning have been issued in Scotland and localized flooding has already caused some roads to be closed. The Glencoe ski slopes were also closed because of high winds in the area. Water pipes have been bursting in central England because of the thaw. Severn Trent Water said that they are already getting extra staff in to cope with the problem of pipes bursting. Senior operations manager Fraser Pithie said that there had already been more than 10,000 calls handled by Severn Trent Water call centre staff. He added that they would be working around the clock in order to cope with the problem.
