Haiti Hit with Another Earthquake

Another powerful earthquake hit Haiti on Wednesday just before 6am, lasting 15 seconds - a 5.9 magnitude aftershock that shook up the streets. It made more buildings collapse, cracked more roads and added even more trauma to the devastation left by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake from last Tuesday. The quake also came only one day after a relief mission started in Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital.

During this earthquake, 7 buildings in Petit-Goave collapsed. The good news is that there haven’t been any reports of people being trapped or crushed by the latest event. This is probably due to most Haitians being afraid already to sleep inside in case of another quake. Their senses were telling them right.

The aftershock briefly interrupted rescue efforts, but it didn’t stop them. People screamed out in fear while doctors and patients sprung out of the University Hospital, while were spurts of temporary panic everywhere.

There are more and more relief efforts being dispatched by Scott Air Force Base, with more than 500,000 pounds of cargo and 5,300 people helping. UN officials have pledged to speed up distributing supplies of food, water and medicine to the communities that haven’t gotten anything yet. Meanwhile, two leading charities have been called to stop adoptions of homeless children since there is still a chance they will get to reunite with their families.

There has been an outpouring of support for Haitians from all corners of the world, including celebrities. However, the help just isn’t getting there as fast everyone would like, and this latest earthquake has only brought more trauma to the area. Although there could be more aftershocks, let’s hope and pray this is the end of them - for the sake of Haitians.
