Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 becomes Most Used Browser
The security warnings surrounding Microsoft Internet Explorer recently haven’t had a very big effect on the browser’s dominance in the market. The browser was affected by negativity with it being blamed for a series of cyber attacks in China against search giant and rival Google.
New figures from NetApplications, a market intelligence firm, show that IE 8 became the most used browser in the world just last month (January). The researcher specifically reported that IE 8 secured 22.31% of the market by itself, which is even more than what IE 6 had after it had been launched for 9 months.
However, last month was a little disappointing for Microsoft and its browser, with the shares in IE 6 dropping to 20.07%, while all of the IE line took a nose dive from 66.92% shares in December to 62.16%. The company’s rival Mozilla with the Firefox browser continued to gain momentum in January, improving from 23.29% market share in December to 24.41%. Google’s Chrome browser slightly increased in market shares as well, from 3.75% in December to 3.92% last month.
Personally, Firefox is a better browser, as it allows for users to customize more with the ability to add on just about any kind of application. Although IE does this too, Firefox seems to have a better selection because they’ve been offering it longer.
So whether some IE users decided to switch browsers because of the cyber attacks or not, it’s clear that Firefox has continued to gain the loyalty of users over the last few years. The browser will continue to gain users, and although they will probably never takeover the top spot that Microsoft’s IE 8 holds, they will come close.
