Kevin Smith and Southwest Airlines Debacle Ends
Film director and actor Keven Smith was a man on a mission after being kicked off a flight with Southwest Airlines for being too fat. The debacle started over the weekend, when he was returning home from San Francisco, where he took to Twitter to let out his frustration at the airline for wrongfully ejecting him from the plane.
Apparently, someone at Southwest Airlines wasn’t straight with Smith to begin with and said that he was a safety risk, which was interpreted as too fat. However, the airline’s vice president of communications and strategic outreach, Linda Rutherford, finally contacted Smith directly by phone and explained that they were just getting to the bottom of what was really going on.
So Smith naturally took to his blog to write one last post about the incident, saying that he is ready to end the debate. He revealed some of his conversation with Linda, posting that the pilot didn’t kick him off the plane because he couldn’t fit in the seat, noting that the pilot seems to have had little to do with making the call. Smith said that Linda told him that she had just found all this out after getting all the information from everyone involved.
The director/actor wondered who made the call though, saying that someone had to point the finger and decide, but he was apparently chosen because he was the last person to board and because the plane’s weight was too much - not his. Another point that bothered him was the fact that the airline stood behind the lie that he was removed from the flight due to his weight.
Regardless of these issues, Smith said that he thanked Linda, noting that she was the nicest employee at Southwest Airlines that he had met during all this chaos. He then asked about when the airline would update their blog on the issue, and she they would do it soon.
The post added that his schedule to go on Larry King must have scared the s**t out of somebody at the company for them to dig that deep into what really happened and resolve the issue - although he isn’t completely satisfied with the outcome, just sick of talking about it. He said that he doesn’t plan to talk about the too fat to fly issue on the show.
