Continental Airlines Charges for Extra Legroom

Continental Airlines, the fourth biggest carrier in the United States, is getting ready to start charging customers for extra legroom on flights, starting March 17. This option will be offered to coach customers for a price when they are checking in for their flight. However, those who are frequent-flier members of the airline, along with their flight buddies, will be able to still get these seats for free.

These seats offer an extra 7 inches of space for customers’ legs, according to the carrier. The amount of seats available on flights will depend on the size of the plane, but they aren’t going to add more of these seats.

The prices of the exit-row seats will vary depending on the popularity of the route and the length of the flight. A spokeswoman for Continental Airlines says that extra legroom on their Houston to New York route will cost coach passengers another $59. However, she added that the fee will increase for international routes. Officials at Continental Airlines say that the new extra charge is their way of offering passengers more if they want to pay for it. Executive vice president and chief marketing officer Jim Compton says that the exit-row seats are worth more, and the carrier wants to offer customers the extra room if they recognize the higher value.

There are also other airlines that are already offering this option to pay more for extra legroom. For example, United Airlines is selling their economy plus seats, which have an extra 5 inches of space, for $49 on flights from Denver to Seattle, while they charge $109 for flights from LA to Tokyo.
