Mu Car Hire Service by Peugeot Launching in UK

The Mu pay-as-you-go car hire service from Peugeot has been operating in France for a while, but now it is branching out and launching in the UK. This will give Brit motorists the opportunity to experience the latest concept in renting a vehicle.

Peugeot’s Mu program allows drivers to have a prepaid account on the Peugeot Mu website, where they will then have access to cars (like the 3008, 407 Coupe, 308 CC and 207 CC), SUVs, MPVs and even accessories (like a roof box, GPS or ski rack). Residents who want to be more environmentally friendly can even hire a bicycle or scooter.

The Mu program’s focus is to make vehicles easier to access in countries and their cities where owning a car is a hassle - not to mention expensive. A majority of residents are simply taking the bus or a train to commute for work or to go shopping, so this leaves little need to own a car. It’s now becoming more practical to rent a car when they need it - particularly cheaper.

This program will probably play a huge role in the Peugeot Ion launch, which is now the new Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The two companies have also made a deal for the 4007/C-Crosser, which is the new Mitsubishi Outlander, while they announced plans earlier this month not to swap equity stakes.

Jon Goodman, managing director, says that Peugeot is the only company to offer an innovative program like this. He expects that the scheme will launch in the UK by end of 2010.
