Line of Light to be lit at Hadrian’s Wall for British Tourism Week
Hadrian’s Wall is scheduled to be lit across the entire 135km stretch by a team of at least 500 volunteers using flaming torches. Dubbed the “line of light” the lanterns will follow the 135km national walking trail.
Hadrian’s Wall spans most of northern England and stems from the area’s strong Roman heritage. The 500 strong volunteers will each be equipped with a gas-powered torch which they will use to light the wall at the set time.
Each volunteer, holding their beacons, will be spaced out at intervals of 250m to create a continuous line of torches ready to light the wall in succession.
The lighting will begin at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend in North Tyneside beginning at 17:45 in the evening. The final torch, almost an hour later, will be lit at Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast of Cumbria.
Once the entire “line of light” has been lit, it will be kept illuminated for about half an hour. Helicopters will be on hand to film the spectacle and residents along the route are being asked to observe a black-out period to heighten the drama of the scene.
The event will mark the beginning of British Tourism Week and has called for a huge out-pouring of community support. This includes the 500 volunteers as well as the over 120 local landowners who have cooperated for the event.
