Nintendo tops May game sales
June 20, 2008
Video game sales were up 37% in the US in May says market research company NPD.
Total sales for video games in May were $1.12bn (£574m). Total sales for this year so far are $6.6bn (£3.38bn).
The sales figures were boosted by Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) which has continued to sell well and is the best selling game for a second month.
NPD said that the strong sales of GTA IV were not boosting the sales of PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles.
“The continued success of GTA 4 is not translating into big hardware sales for either PS3 or the 360 but there may be a lift in June due to gift giving for Father’s Day and graduations,” NPD analysts Anita Frazier said in a statement.
Nintendo maintained its top spot in May, as the best selling console, they sold 675,000 Wii’s. In comparison Sony sold 209,000 Playstation 3 consoles and Microsoft sold 187,000 Xbox 360 consoles according to NPD.
NPD has alos said that they predict that game sales could reach $23bn for 2008, which is far higher than the $18bn in 2007. This was a 43% increase from 2006.
