The British International Motor Show has announced that their show for 2010 is canceled due to the global recession. Organizers say that the challenge of putting the show on during the recession, which has crippled a number of auto manufacturers, is the reason they have canceled the show.
Car companies have cut tens of thousands of staff, watched their profits dive, and closed factories since 2007. The British International Motor Show has not missed a year in 100 years, for the exception of cancellations during both world wars, according to a newspaper. The event has been done biennially since 1903, and this will be the first time that it is canceled during peacetime.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the show organizer, consulted with vehicle manufacturers about the move and said that companies wanted to cutback on the cost of being in the shows. They added that the recession also means fewer new models made to be showcased.
A spokeswoman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said that it became obvious to them that the problems in the economy were getting worse, and they found themselves at a point where the car makers were not going to commit. The economy worsened, so they had to cancel the show, she continued. The spokeswoman also added that it is regrettable and sad, but there is no avoiding it.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders also said that they are committed to showcasing the products and achievements of the car industry. However, the downturn of the economy and unprecedented challenges that the sector is facing across the globe have made the event impossible for exhibitors to commit to.
