JetBlue Airways Plane Makes Emergency Landing
JetBlue Airways Flight 507 had to make an emergency landing on Monday after the engine casing on the plane flew off during takeoff at about 6am, according to officials. The flight was en route to Fort Lauderdale, Florida from Newark, New Jersey. The flight turned back to Newark Liberty International Airport, and the passengers were put on another plane for their journey.
The metal casing that covers the engine, which is also called the cowling, fell off and hit the runway when the plane was taking off. JetBlue spokeswoman Alison Croyle, in Forest Hills, New York, described the engine cowling to be similar to that of the hood of a car.
The pilots were alerted to the issue shortly after take off, so they returned to the airport. Croyle said that they landed only 11 minutes after takeoff. She continued that the 134 passengers were to continue their flight on a new plane, which was set to depart Newark at 11:15am and arrive in Fort Lauderdale at 2:05pm. She added that passengers will be refunded round-trip fares and given a certificate for a future round-trip flight.
Nobody was hurt during the flight that had to turn around. However, the Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating the issue, while maintenance workers will also inspect the plane, according to Lynn Lunsford, a watchdog spokesman.
This isn’t the only issue that is reported to have happened on a JetBlue Airways flight this week. On Sunday, a flight from Orlando lost radio contact with air traffic controllers not long before landing at Westchester County Airport. However, the pilot was able to communicate with the tower via typed messages and landed the plane safely.
