2 Women Arrested for Attempted Smuggling of Dead Relative on easyJet Plane
Authorities arrested 2 women for trying to take a dead relative on an easyJet flight departing the Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Berlin. Check-in desk staff called authorities after being concerned for the elderly man’s health. He was sitting in a wheelchair and partially hidden behind sunglasses. When he didn’t seem to be moving a lot, the women just said that he was sleeping.
After a first aid teamed arrived first, it was discovered that the 91- year-old man, a German national, wasn’t asleep but actually dead. The 44- and 66-year-old women were arrested by police, who suspected they failed to file a death notification. An insider said that the authorities were concerned for the man, as they realized something wrong when they tried to talk to him.
After being questioned, the women were released on bail. A spokesman said that how the man really died is being investigated, but they don’t think there was any foul play. They actually think that he died earlier this week of natural causes.
A spokeswoman for the airport said that she’s never heard of something like this happening before and thinks it’s a little strange. A spokeswoman for the airline confirmed that the women arrived at the check-in desk with the man in a wheelchair. The staff was concerned for his health and called a first aid team, she continued. She added that they called the authorities when they discovered he was dead.
In order to send the remains of a body abroad, it’s required that paperwork be filled out and they are contained in hermetically-sealed zinc-lined coffins and placed with the cargo for the journey. It’s safe to say that these 2 women were trying to avoid this complex and costly process.
