Ryanair Charges Toilet Tax

Ryanair has been considering charging their passengers a fee to use the toilet for a long time. However, this seems to be really happening now. The low-cost carrier has confirmed their plans to introduce this so-called ‘toilet tax’, for which passengers will pay €1 into coin-operated lavatories. The airline also plans to reduce the number of toilets on their aircraft to just 1.

It’s typical for budget airlines to tack on extra charges for luxury extras that travelers want and would normally get included in the price of a regular airline fare. Stephen McNamara, the Ryanair spokesman, has justified this new charge, saying that it’s their hope passengers will start using the bathroom before and after flights. He also explained that the airline will now be able to add 6 more seats with the removal of two lavatories on each plane.

Meanwhile, Ryanair will also increase the fee on check-in baggage - like many carriers. This means passengers will have to pay €20, but they are being advised to take advantage of the airline’s carry-on baggage allowance. McNamara says that they want to give travelers a reason to fly light during the summer, and this is how they are going about it. The fee will be introduced for July and August only.

The increase in fees and addition of other charges isn’t a surprise at all. With recovery from the recession in sight, airlines and other travel industry companies are eager to turn to profit this year, and start making back the billions they lost over the last year-and-a-half. However, if they do too much, too fast, they will only prevent sales as travelers continue to look for the best available deals.
