British Airways backs bid for 2018 World Cup

British Airways is gearing up to become the main sponsor of England’s bid to host the 2018 football World Cup finals. The deal is said to be worth around £1 million and will be delivered as flights and cash. Having BA as a backer will be good news for a committee which will spend much of its time flying around the world, trying to convince Fifa members that the UK would be the best country in which to hold one of sports biggest events.

BA will now join a list of other companies backing the bid, including British Telecom, PwC and supermarket giants Morrisons. Former England star, Alan Shearer has also added his voice to those who would like to see the 2018 World Cup played in English stadiums.

He said that he had been extremely fortunate to be a member of the England squad when they played in France in 1998. Shearer said that his first hand experience of playing in a World Cup meant that he understood what a great sporting tournament it was.

The announcement that BA will be sponsoring the campaign by donating £1 million is likely to raise some eyebrows after the airline’s recent troubles. It has recently found itself locked in disputes with cabin crew members because of measures put in place to try and cut costs.

BA also reported that it was losing between £15 and £20 million everyday its fleet was grounded because of the ash cloud which closed European airspace for nearly a week.
