Air India Flight tried to Pull Out of Landing
The Air India Express pilot that crashed this weekend is said to have been trying to pull out of landing by taking off again. It’s been reported, according to the cockpit voice recorder, that he was last heard by air traffic control yelling, “Overshoot, overshoot.” The flight then crashed through the perimeter, fell off the cliff and caught on fire, killing all but 8 of the 166 people on board Saturday morning.
Investigators have discovered that the 55-year-old pilot, whose name was Zlatko Glusica, was told that he was clear to land the flight. However, he was suddenly told to abort the landing. No one knows for certain yet what happened, but it appears that the pilot was trying to take off again. Officials found that the throttle was pushed forward, which means that the plane was accelerating, while one of the survivors says that the pilot tried to take off again after touching down.
It has also been reported that investigators found one of the aircraft’s data recorders, but the main one is still among the wreckage. Nevertheless, the Civil Aviation Ministry has said that it could take 2 weeks for them to analyze the information.
Speculation has been circling that the accident was caused by pilot error, but the carrier has defended Glusica. Air India Express said that he was trained to land at the Bajpe airport, had done so at least 19 previous times, and was well rested prior to the journey.
According to officials, the families of the victims have collected all but 12 of the bodies as of Sunday. The government and airline have both announced that relatives will be given payments that will combine for a total - 1,200,000 rupees for those over the age of 12 that died; 700,000 rupees for those under the age of 12; and 250,000 to injured passengers.
