Sleeping Passenger Sues United Airlines
Early Tuesday morning, a female passengers was left on an United Airlines plane for more than 3 hours after the aircraft landed. Ginger McGuire claims that she went through 4 flights being canceled on her in Detroit and then had to wait another 10 hours before departing Washington Dulles, after which she was left on a landed plane for hours. The 36-year-old is now suing the carrier for emotional distress, negligence and false imprisonment, says Geoffrey Fieger, her attorney.
This issue was noticed on Wednesday in the media, but it happened on Tuesday. McGuire fell asleep on an United Express flight to Philadelphia, which landed at 12:27am. She was left unnoticed until a cleaning crew found her about 3:50am. One fellow traveler says that he can’t believe no one out of the 50 passengers on the flight woke her up.
United Express flights are operated by Trans State Airlines, which is an United Airlines regional partner. However, the main airline is the only one the woman’s suit mentions. A spokeswoman for the carrier, Sarah Massier, says that they are closely working with Trans States to find out how McGuire was overlooked and to come up with a solution to the issue. The regional partner says that checking to make sure all passengers are off a landed plane safely is standard protocol.
This issue may become big, as the carriers involved aren’t the only ones conducting an investigation. Both local and federal authorities are launching their own investigation into the incident, which is actually a rather serious matter.
