Delta Air Lines is Sorry for Sending Kids on Wrong Flights
Delta Air Lines has blamed a mix-up with paperwork for sending two kids to the wrong destinations while they were flying under the unaccompanied minors program offered by the carrier. The airline says that the children were connecting at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Tuesday when they were put on each others’ flights.
Paul Skrbec, a spokesman for Delta Air Lines, said on Wednesday that the boy involved was suppose to fly to Boston but ended up in Cleveland, while the girl involved was suppose to fly to Cleveland but ended up in Boston. Due to passenger privacy, he didn’t release any information about the kids.
However, one media source in Boston has identified the boy as 9-year-old Kieran Kershaw, who was traveling to see his grandparents. Upon arriving in the wrong destination, Kieran says that the airline employees apologized to him and were really nice. They gave him free food and some Dunkin’ Donuts, he added.
The boy’s grandfather, Larry, criticized Delta Air Lines, saying that they paid the carrier to check on him and be with him, but they didn’t even ask his name to match it with the paperwork. Not only that, he continued, another child was sent to the wrong city. He then questioned how they could mix up a boy and girl in the paperwork.
Skrbec says that the incident is being investigated, but doesn’t know how there was a mix-up, adding that this kind of situation is very rare. However, he couldn’t give any figures on how often it does happen. The airline also said that they have apologized to the families, put the children on flights to where they were suppose to go at no extra cost, arranged full refunds for the kids’ tickets, as well as provided credits for the families to use for future travel.
