British Airways to launch Gatwick-Cancun Flights
British Airways has announced that they will relaunch services between Gatwick and Cancun this winter after dropping the flights in April 2002. The carrier will now be the only British airline to operate direct, scheduled routes to the holiday hotspot.
The two per week service will start on November 3, departing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It will supplement the existing connecting service from Heathrow to Cancun offered by the airline, which is operated by American Airlines, their codeshare partner, and includes a Miami or Dallas stopover. The flights will take 11 hours on a Boeing 777, and fares are already on sale from £630 for Economy Class returns.
Richard Tams, the sales and marketing manager for British Airways in the UK and Ireland, said that they are happy to be the only British scheduled carrier to offer direct flights to Cancun. This is the perfect addition to their Gatwick long-haul premium leisure network, he added.
British Airways has also expanded their network with added flights to Montego Bay, the Dominican Republic, Maldives and Sharm el Sheikh. Some of these were also relaunched services that had been suspended.
Meanwhile, British Airways may be prompted to focus their business in Madrid with the Iberia merger, which is still waiting on shareholders’ votes. This may come after the new UK coalition government decided to trash plans to expand the runways of London’s airports.
Chief executive Willie Walsh has already noted that Madrid has a great airport with excess capacity, and they will grow there. The airline will be able to access the growth that leaves the UK for other parts of Europe, as their assets are mobile and can be focused on developing Madrid instead of London.
