Authorities Seek Man for Stealing Car Rentals
There have been numerous thefts at car rental agencies in Phoenix and Tucson, and authorities are searching for the culprit. They believe the man’s name to be Carlos Oliver or Carlos Lopez, a Hispanic in his mid-30s.
Police say that he has ripped off hire vehicles using Mexican identification. After one company rented to him twice, they are out two very high-priced cars. The car rental agencies haven’t been named, but authorities have said that they were in airports. He was given a 2010 Jeep Commander two times from the same agency, with each visit being less than a week apart.
John Ivanoff, the police chief for the Tucson Airport Authority, said that the man who rented the vehicles was obviously very smart. He didn’t think that the two vehicles would be noticed stolen if it happened in that short time span, he added.
After the thefts in Tucson, the suspect went to Phoenix where he rented another car at Sky Harbor Airport and never returned it. Police in the city are investigating the case. According to Detective Mike Fischer, they are looking at everything. They are trying to find out how he obtaining these cars, he added, because someone would figure out what he is up to at one point.
Authorities also know that none of the cars have been used to commit crimes, so the vehicles are probably out of the country, leaving the rental companies out of money. Police are offering a reward for information that leads to the man’s arrest. Anyone with information can call 88-CRIME.
