England Knocked Out of World Cup

The momentum England had on Wednesday, when they beat Slovenia, was lost on Sunday during their Round of 16 game against Germany. It was a sad day for the strikers and their fans as they were knocked from the tournament by Germany’s 4 scores to their 1.

The Germans were up 2-0 with goals by Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose when England striker Matthew Upson scored to bring his team back into the match. Only minutes after, it’s understood that Frank Lampard scored again for England; however, his shot, which hit the crossbar and then bounced over the line, wasn’t counted as a point by the referee or his assistants. The management and players for England protested the decision while the replays clearly showed that the ball was in.

In the second half, both Germany and England had a chance to take the match. That was…until Thomas Mueller scored 2 goals for Germany during the middle of the half. The goals were made only 3 minutes apart from each other, putting the chance of even a tie out of reach for England. The biggest chance they had was created by Captain Steven Gerrard with only 10 minutes left; however, his shot was saved.

England will now exit the World Cup, which is rather shocking for everyone. They usually do really well, but apparently didn’t have it altogether for this year’s tournament.

Meanwhile, Germany will go on to face Argentina in the quarter-finals after knocking out Mexico last night. The other decided quarter-final match so far will be Uruguay against Ghana. The remaining 8 teams in the Round of 16 will complete their matches today and tomorrow to decide who else will go on to the quarter-finals.
