Victor Hanescu Fined for Spitting into Wimbledon Audience

Romanian Victor Hanescu made a controversial exit from the Wimbledon Championships on Friday, when he spit into the crowd. This was due to four youths - one Irishman and three Brits - who are alleged to have been drunk and verbally abusive. The tennis player had previously complained to the umpire about the youths and was frustrated when their heckling continued even after stewards ejected them from their seats.

According to reports, the four youths were arrested and later bailed. A decision on whether to charge them is to be made after authorities complete their investigation. Hanescu on the other hand, has been fined £10,000 for spitting into the crowd and walking off the court. At the time, the tennis player was leading Germany’s Daniel Brands 3-0 in the fifth set.

Later, Hanescu apologized for what happened. He said that he briefly lost control after he was insulted from someone in the crowd. He never should have done it, but he’s only human and made a mistake, he added. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club also made a statement, saying that Hanescu has been fined £5,000 for not using best efforts at the conclusion of the match and another £5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. They added that the referee and chair umpire would not comment more on the issue.

This may not be the end of it for Hanescu though. It’s still possible that the police can charge him with common assault if it’s found that he hit a member of the public when he spit into the audience.

He was losing 3-0 not winning. can you imagine he would throw away a lead like that? no. he was losing and had just been broken for a second time in the set.
