England sent home after German thrashing
England football fans saw the Three Lions fall 4-1 to the German squad on Sunday, ending its dreams of a World Cup 2010 championship in South Africa. While Fabio Capello and his team will return back to the UK, the German squad is set to play Argentina in its next match, after the powerful South American team vanquished Mexico 3-1 in its Sunday match.
The England club showed promise early in the match against its storied rival, and although trailing 2-0 after 30 minutes of play, a header by Matthew Upson in the 37th minute cut the lead in half. The Three Lions thought they had tied the game at 2-2 a minute later as Frank Lampard’s shot hit the bar and crossed the plane into the goal, although the score was not awarded by the officials.
Mr Capello said after the game the play was the turning point in the match, and wondered why there is no technology in place to validate goals which the officials miss through human error. Mr Lampard was also visibly upset after the game because of the poor ruling, and said during his post-match interview that it was a clear goal, seen by 40,000 football fans in the stadium, and that it certainly affected the outcome.
The Three Lions could not regroup in the second half, as the Germans continued their efforts after the break with Thomas Mueller scoring two more goals, putting an emphatic end to England’s quest for the 2010 World Cup title. Mr Capello, while rumoured to have thoughts of resigning as the head of the Three Lions after the games, dispelled these musings after the match saying he will discuss the future of his role at on the team with the Football Association in the coming weeks.
