Roger Federer Loses in Wimbledon Championships Quarter-finals

Roger Federer has surprisingly been defeated in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, which is only the second time he has ever lost at the tournament (the first was in 2002). This comes after no. 12 seed Tomas Berdych played a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 match on Wednesday. This loss means that Federer will not be able to win his 7th Wimbledon title.

This news also comes after three other upsets during the tournament. The first was when Andy Roddick was defeated in Round 4; the next two upsets came when both Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams lost to their quarter-final opponents.

Despite these shocks, Federer’s is the biggest so far, but what’s more is that it only took 4 sets for the champion to be ousted by Berdych. Federer was unusually tentative when going up to the net and missed regulation forehands during the match. He complained afterward about a leg and back problem as well. However, it was just Berdych’s day to shine, and this sets him up to meet Novak Djokovic for the semi-final on Sunday.

After leaving the court, Berdych said that it’s really hard to explain his feelings, as this win is so unbelievable. To play in the stadium against someone like Federer and to stand as the winner is just amazing, he continued. This was the hardest match of his career, he continued, and it’s a big step forward. Berdych also said that it was tough to think about his next opponent so soon, so he will enjoy this victory for a few hours and then get ready and prepare for it.
