Wimbledon Championship Title Winners
The Wimbledon Championships had a lot of upsets, but those who moved on to the finals and then to become the title winners were obviously meant to win. However, this didn’t come without a slight surprise.
In the men’s singles final, Rafael Nadal faced Tomas Berdych. It was no secret that Nadal had been having trouble with a previous injury, so it was a great surprise that he was able to overcome such an obstacle. During the final match, he defeated Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to win the title.
After the victory, Nadal said that it is dream to hold the trophy, and it was amazing to play his fourth final after last year being difficult. This was probably the toughest thing he’s done in his career, he added, and he’s lucky to have such a great team supporting him.
During the women’s finals, Serena Williams faced Vera Zvonareva and came out on top with 6-3, 6-2. This means that she has now won 13 Grand Slams, but she still has some to go to achieve her ambition of winning more Grand Slams than anyone during her career. The record is held by Aussie Margaret Court with 24.
After losing to Serena, Zvonareva joined Elena Vesnina in the women’s doubles final against Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova, who scored 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. King and Shvedova are now the 5th unseeded team to win since they started seeding in 1927, while it was also the first final since 1975 with two unseeded teams.
In the men’s doubles final, Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner faced Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau. Melzer and Petzscher won 6-1, 7-5, 7-5, making the victory their second doubles title this year. Leander Paes and Cara Black won the mixed doubles final against Wesley Moodie and Lisa Raymond 6-4, 7-6 (5). This gives Paes his 12th Grand Slam title.
