World Cup Quarter-Final Round Up

The quarter-final matches for the World Cup were held on Friday and Saturday. Some of the teams made it clear that they were meant to win, while others were a little more subtle about it.

Netherlands and Brazil met in Port Elizabeth on Friday to determine which of them would go on to the semi-final round. Brazil’s Robinho made an early goal, leaving Netherlands trailing, but this wasn’t enough to stop the Dutch players from wining 2-1.

Wesley Sneijder was the one to make the winning goal. He said after the match that it just slipped through and was a great feeling, as they had a difficult first half. At halftime they told each other that they had to improve their game and put more pressure on Brazil, he continued, so they gave it all they had and were rewarded. The game was amazing, he added, and he thinks they have shown everyone how they can play.

Also on Friday, Uruguay and Ghana met at Soccer City for their quarter-final match. The match ended 1-1, so the winner was decided on 4-2 in penalties, making Uruguay the victor. The winning penalty shot was made by Sebastian Abreu.

Saturday’s quarter-final round started off with a bang between Germany and Argentina at Green Point Stadium. The bang was made by Germany, who totally creamed Argentina 4-0. It was obvious that the Germans weren’t going home without a fight, but it appeared that the Argentines weren’t presenting much of a battle - they simply never really showed up.

Hours afterward at Ellis Park Stadium, Spain defeated Paraguay 1-0. The winning goal came only 8 minutes before the end of the second half by David Villa.

All of the victors will meet in the semi-finals this week to determine which two teams will go on to the finals. This will start with an 8:30pm match on Tuesday at Green Point Stadium between Uruguay and Netherlands. Then on Wednesday, Germany and Spain will meet at 8:30pm at Durban Stadium.
