Netherlands Wins World Cup Semi-final
Netherlands was able to continue their winning streak during the World Cup semi-final with a 3-2 victory over Uruguay. Now the team will move on to meet the winner of today’s semi-final match (Germany-Spain) in the World Cup final on Sunday at 8:30pm at Soccer City Stadium.
Both Netherlands and Uruguay started the match well, although Uruguay seized a few more possessions during the opening stages. They gave up a good fight, but just weren’t able to hold on to their momentum.
Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst was the first to score for the match from 41 yards out in the 18th minute during the first half. Diego Forlan was the fist to score for Uruguay 35 yards out, putting the score at 1-1 for halftime.
Then during the last 20 minutes of the second half, Wesley Sneijder made a goal for Netherlands, and it was only three minutes after when Arjen Robben gave the team another point. During the first minutes of added time, Maximiliano Pereira was able to score for Uruguay, giving the team hope, but they were unable to find another opening before the whistle was blown.
The victory for Netherlands means that they will be going to the World Cup final for the first time since 1978. If they win the final match, they will hold their first trophy for this tournament.
The journey still isn’t over for Uruguay though. The underdog of the four semi-finalists will be meeting the defeated team from today’s semi-final match on Saturday at Port Elizabeth Stadium at 8:30pm. This game is to decide who places third in the 32-nation tournament.
