Spain Moves On to First World Cup Finals

Spain defeated Germany 1-0 during the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, and Barcelona centre-back and veteran defender Carles Puyol made the winning and only goal of the match. He hit a header from 10 yards out only 17 minutes before time ran out.

This is the first time that Spain has made it to the World Cup final, which means that, if they win, it will be the first time that the national team wins the tournament. However, they will be facing some fierce competition and desire to do the same. Netherlands won their semi-final match on Tuesday, which was their first since 1978, while the national team has never won the tournament either. So no matter what happens, the World Cup will have a first-time winner at the end of Sunday’s 8:30pm match at Soccer City Stadium.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said that he won’t single out individual players, as he believes everyone did extraordinary. However, they have to be careful since there is still a match left, he continued. They know about Dutch football, he added, and this will be a very hard final.

Germany coach Joachim Loew congratulated Spain, saying that he believes they will win the finals, as they have been the best team for the last 2 or 3 years. Spain played well during the semi-final, pushing them to their limits, he added.

Although both 3-time champions Germany and 2-time champions Uruguay have been knocked out of the final, their journey in the tournament isn’t over yet. Both teams will meet for a match on Saturday that will determine who is third in the overall tournament. This game will be held at 8:30pm at Port Elizabeth Stadium.
