Sandy Casar Wins Tour de France Stage 9
Stage 9 of the Tour de France ended with a victory for Sandy Casar. The French cyclist led a breakaway of 7 in the 127-mile trek. In a sprint finish, he crossed the line to beat Luis-Leon Sanchez, Damiano Cunego, Christophe Moreau and Anthony Charteau, who completed the stage in the that order for the top 5.
Casar said that he lost all hope of a good result for the general classification after having a tough first week. So from that moment, he began to think about stage 9, as it suited him, he continued, explaining that the climbs were tough, but it’s better for him when the finish isn’t at altitude. Casar added that he dedicated this win to his father, whom he thought about in the final.
This was another challenging day in the Alps, but Andy Schleck and 2-time Tour winner Albert Contador were able to break away from their classification rivals. Schleck was able to take the lead in the overall standings, which means he gets to wear the yellow jersey. However, he will need to continue this momentum in order to stay ahead of Contador, who is closing in on first place.
Today the cyclists will journey across the last trek in the Alps mountain range, which is 111 miles. They will have to climb Col du Noyer, which is the highest of the 3 they encounter during the race. Then they will get a 3-day break from traveling mountains until going back on them again. Here is a better look at the top 10 in the overall standings:
- Adny Schleck 43h35′41”
