Enterprise Holdings to Buy 500 Nissan Leafs

Enterprise Holdings has said that they plan to purchase 500 Leaf vehicles, which is the New electric car from Nissan, staring January next year. The retail price of these cars is over US$30,000, so the car hire company is ready to spend about US$15 million for the new electric fleet.

The Leaf is a car that uses no gasoline and doesn’t produce greenhouse gas emissions. They can be charged using a 110-volt home outlet or commercial charging stations with 220 volts or 480 volts. Most electric cars can travel about 100 miles with just one charge.

Enterprise said that they plan to roll out the vehicles in 8 markets to start with, which include Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Los Angeles, California; San Diego, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Tuscon, Arizona; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Nashville, Tennessee. However, they will only be launched at a limited number of branches so that they can train their employees properly on how to show customers the basics of using and charging the cars. The company is set to start installing charging stations at some of their locations in November.

Enterprise Holdings director of sustainability Lee Broughton said that they have a history and vested interest in working with manufacturers to integrate alternative-powered cars into their fleet. With neighborhood and airport locations within 15 miles of 90% of the US population, he continued, their offices are uniquely positioned to test the market with new alternative fuel technologies.

Aside from owning and operating the largest passenger fleet of cars in the world, Enterprise and its subsidiaries also operate the largest fuel-efficient fleet in the world, with nearly 7,000 gas/electric hybrid vehicles. They have also contributed or promised over US$120 million to environmental programs in the last 7 years.
