Canadian Probe into Veiled Women Boarding Flights
Federal authorities are now investigating a video posted online that shows two veiled Muslims passing through a Montreal airport boarding gate unchecked. Transport Canada has vowed to find a security gap if it exists, as this video suggests that niqab-clad travelers are allowed to board planes without having their photo identification double-checked on a regular basis. Meanwhile, a prominent Islamic group says that this is part of a campaign against the niqab.
This video comes during mounting criticism of the niqab. In Quebec, the provincial government has introduced legislation that requires citizens to have their faces showing when they receive or dispense public services.
Transport Minister John Baird calls this video is a serious concern that has been brought to their attention. They are going to look into it immediately, he continued, describing the reports as deeply disturbing. The investigation will cover potential issues with relevant security policies and the circumstances of alleged breaches, he explained, adding that he’s asked his departmental officials to complete a probe that will make sure they have a single law that applies to everyone.
However, North American Muslim Foundation executive director Farooq Khan says that the video is absolute nonsense. There is a constant effort by certain quarters to discredit the niqab, he said. Muslims wearing a niqab typically undergo thorough security checks, he noted, which take place in private with the assistance of a female security guard. Just because someone is wearing a niqab, he added, doesn’t mean they don’t have to go through a security check.
