Aires Airline Plane Crash Kills Just 1
It truly is a miracle that just 1 passenger was killed in a plane crash that split the aircraft into 3 pieces. A flight for Aires, a Colombian airline, was approaching the runway in San Andres during the early morning hours of Monday when it crashed on the runway, possibly due to weather conditions.
In a passenger list released by police, there were 127 people listed on the flight, which included 6 crew and 121 passengers. When the emergency crews arrived, they found that most of the passengers were scattered on the runway. Only some of the passengers were lucky enough to leave the sight without injury, including an 18-month-old boy, while some of the passengers were in critical condition at Amor de Patria Hospital.
Col. Hector Carrascal, the director of navigation services for the Civil Aviation Authority in Colombia, said that there were 6 American, 5 French, 4 Costa Rican, 4 Brazilian and 2 German travelers on the flight. Amar Fernandez de Barreto has been identified as the passenger who was killed.
Reports about what caused the crash have been contradicting. It was reported at first that a downdraft may have shook the aircraft as it was preparing to land, which could have caused the crash. However, governor Pedro Gallardo and the aircraft’s pilot said that the plane was hit by lightning.
Carrascal also initially reported that there was a storm in the area but not at the airport. However, CNN World Weather has confirmed that multiple lightning strikes occurred around the airport during the time of the crash. The World Wide Lightning Location Network also reported that there were 11 strikes in a 5-minute period within 6 miles (10 kilometers) of the runway.
